Proper running-in of the band saw

For long-term and trouble-free operation of the band saw, it is mandatory to run-in the web.

Proper running–in is an increase in the life of the saw up to 40% while observing the sawing process, taking into account the properties of the material.

If you immediately use a band saw in the modes recommended by the manufacturer, cracks and other defects will appear at the tips of the teeth, not only reducing the life of the blade, but also impairing the quality of processing.

In some cases, the new saw may jam and the teeth may completely collapse.

Why do I need a run-in

The teeth of the new band saw are distinguished by sharp edges.

During the lapping process, a microradius is formed on the tooth surface, with values that directly depend on the parameters of the sawn material.

Therefore, the saw is run-in on the material with which constant work is expected.

Process technology

The procedure for lapping a new ribbon cloth is carried out in the following order: Thus, the recommended feed rate is gradually achieved during the lapping process.

The procedure is considered completed after cutting 300 cm2 of the material.

The total lapping time is at least 15 minutes.

Characteristic curves are formed on the run-in teeth, which significantly reduces the risk of tooth breakage even if the recommended cutting speed is slightly exceeded.

Important: during lapping, it is necessary to monitor the operation of the machine.

If vibrations, extraneous noise, or chip color changes occur, it is recommended to immediately reduce the feed rate.

Operation of the saw after lapping

After lapping, the belt web is operated at the feed speeds declared by the manufacturer.

A properly ground saw quickly reaches working speeds, and the cutting process takes place evenly, without blocking the blade and the appearance of any defects.

A cloth rolled on a certain material must be used only for cutting workpieces with similar characteristics.  If lapping was carried out on a soft material, then a new run-in is required before cutting a harder workpiece.
