Key concepts in band sawing

The key concepts in the field of band sawing are considered to be: cutting speed, productivity level and feed rate of the saw blade.

Cutting speed

The cutting speed (V) refers to the speed of movement of the cutting tool in relation to the workpiece during a certain unit of time.

This parameter is usually measured in meters per minute.

In the field of band sawing, the cutting speed is the speed of movement of the cutting tool in m/min.

The recommended cutting speed is determined in accordance with the data of the standard tables.

It usually depends on two factors:

In most cases, the cutting speed of high-grade rolled metal is 10-150 m/min.

This parameter in the process of sawing non-ferrous metals can reach 3000 m/min.

It is worth noting that the cutting speed largely depends on the ability of the workpiece material to process.

The larger it is, the higher the sawing speed.

It should also be noted that on budget machine tools, the specified cutting speed sometimes does not correspond to reality.

In the presence of such a device, it is advisable to use a tachometer.

This device will allow you to clarify the actual sawing speed (V fact).

Additionally, it is possible to use the visual monitoring method.

This method provides for the use of the following formula: where L is the length of the cutting blade in meters; k is the number of revolutions per T cut.

To understand how to use this formula, consider the following example: The length of the saw blade is 3.3 meters.

During the cut (32 seconds), the saw makes 8 revolutions.

Thus: V fact = (3, 3*8*60)/32 = 49, 5 m/min

Performance level

The performance level is the amount of material that can be cut in one minute.

This indicator is measured in square centimeters per minute.

To determine this value, 2 values are used: the cross-sectional area in cm2 and the cutting time in minutes.

The performance level is a tabular value that depends on the type of equipment, as well as on the material and size of the workpiece.

To set the required actual productivity, the following formula is used: where S is the cross–sectional area in square centimeters; T is the cutting time of the workpiece in minutes.

To determine the level of performance, you can also use information from the regulatory table, which takes into account the dependence of this parameter on the cutting time.

Feed rate

The feed rate (Vf) of the saw frame is measured in millimeters per minute.

To calculate the actual feed, the following formula is used: where Ø (h) is the diameter of the cut in millimeters; T cut is the cutting time of the workpiece in minutes.

Machine tools with hydraulic feed provide for the presence of a speed control handle with a calibration from 1 to 10.

To select the appropriate feed rate, you need to perform 4 steps.

These actions are described in the following example:

At the next stage, the feed rate is determined:
